  1. Immigrant feel-good stories are typical of the leftist Toronto Star whose interest is to promote visible-minority success stories whenever possible, as this article demonstrates.

Note the serious lack of "multicultural" aspects to the story line. The lead character is the Brampton-based truck driver Balwinder Gill (Indian-born immigrant) with honourable mention of the folks back home, Daljit Dhillon, the Punjab-born mechanic, Narinderjit Singh Mattu, the trucking owner, Nachhattar Chohan, president of the Indian Trucking Association and then a few token Canadian names thrown in, only to remind us this tale is taking place in Canada.

If the Indian-born reporter Raveena Aulakh was writing for an Indian-based newspaper for the benefit of Indian readers in her home country, I could then understand the strong racial bias that underlines this article, but she is employed by a major Canadian newspaper that regularly promotes the "joys of diversity" in multi-culti Canada. So where is the promotional diversity in this article??

Instead, the major story line is wrapped around a one foreign culture/race (monoculturalism?) and even gloats of having more than "65% of truck drivers in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) as being Indo-Canadians" according to Nachhattar Chohan, of the Indian Trucking Association. The source of this astounding information -- with a certain glee attached to it -- would be appreciated. Even if this statement was true, does it deserve bragging rights in the supposed "multicultural" GTA??

One commentator sums it up best: "Mattu signed her up minutes after taking her for a road test. 'I also thought that if I hire her, other (South Asian) women will also think about it,' he recalls. It goes to show that immigrants are biased towards hiring people with their own cultural background. If ordinary Canadians did this we'd be called racist."

Also noteworthy, was the reporter conveniently ommitting the racial component of the 28 drivers who are employed by this Indian family's trucking company. Due to the reporter's "oversight" in not reporting this important aspect, I would suppose this translates into 100% Indian-immigrant drivers.

As usual, the usual double standards apply here, and what said above bears repeating - "If ordinary Canadians did this we'd be called racist."

  3. Jaswinder Kaur, who drives a tractor-trailer with her husband, Avtar Singh, didn't want her photograph taken....

"When you are new here, you have to do whatever comes your way and work hard," says Kaur, who had few options. "I don't have any kind of training and I can't speak English," she says in Punjabi.

ok, I'm mad ... what the hell man, she can't speak any english and has no training yet is behind the wheel of a 50,000 pound vehicle (I'm not sure how much trucks weigh so i may be off here).

Whats it going to take for these govt inspectors who are supposed to regulate this kind of thing to actually do their friggin job.
I don't think its too hard to go down to one of these companies and make sure all their drivers are licensed.
They really need to shut down some of these shaddy driving schools , throw the bums in jail, because they are playing russian roulette with the public safety.

    peace out
