The Pastie Experiment
Spot the pastie
One pastie wrapped in foil
When i was in the Army we used to wrap food up in tin foil, place in, on, under, or between certain parts of the engine and when you stopped your vehicle you had a nice hot meal. Well i hadnt tried this since until yesterday, trouble is these new fangled trucks are just to efficient, there is practically no heat loss. Fantastic if you are designing a truck to cater for the needs of an industry that is constantly striving to be greener, leaner and more efficient. Not so good if you are trying to warm up a pastie.
I needed a place that got hot and had a safe place to wedge my lunch (no double entendre intended) that was easily accessible and relatively safe. After wedging my fingers into various orifices, nooks and crannies i found a place that suitably burnt. I never was that technical when it comes to experiments, if you want to know if something is hot then touch it.
As you can see i found a spot between the air cleaner and the exhaust. I carefully stuffed my pastie in as you can see from the above pic and drove from Chepstow to Llantrissant, approximately 30 miles (50 km)
I pulled into a lay-by, eagerly awaiting a nice hot lunch.........
And guess what, it was still bloody cold, so much for technology.

I think your either going to end up with soot and charred black chunks of...
ReplyDeletecharred food.
Or slightly warm not-so-delicious food in aluminum foil.
Either way i say you don't give up. Ive been trying to figure out a way to heat up a can of soup under the hood for quite a while.
p.s. I'm confused. Are you still going to be driving in Canada, or is that on hold?
Hi Aaron
ReplyDeleteWelcome to my blog and yes i am going to be driving in Canada and very shortly. we have almost completed on our UK house sale and hoping to join H & R Transport in early August, our new life is already set up over there, its just a matter of closing down the old one over here.
With the pastie thing, these european cab overs are so heat efficient that nothing gets hot except in the core of the engine.
we have got tri-packs in the Freightliners at H & R so i am going to cheat and just get a microwave.
Hope all this makes sense as i have sunk a considerable amount of bourbon and i am focusing thru one eye, when i open both i see double.
stay safe buddy.
HA! Cheers
