The Emigrant Trails

I was between Flying J's and Pilots and chin strapped (very tired) so i called it a day and pulled into a rest stop. Next morning i woke up to find it was also a historical site so being the nosey blighter that i am, i went to investigate.

It turns out to be a site dedicated to the Emigrants who went out to conquer Oregan and California, these pioneers have fascinated me since being in North America as they did a similar thing to what we have done only hundreds of years before and they didnt have a Freightliner to get from A to B, it was all Chuck Waggon or Shanks's Pony. Also we didnt have the annoyance of Red Indians trying to turn us into giant pincushions.
Notice in one of the pics the wheel ruts, those are the actual wheel ruts left by the pioneers. I have to admit i must have stood there for about half an hour just looking over the landscape trying to imagine seeing it through their eyes. I know this sounds really sad but i felt proud to stand where they stood all those years ago and look out over the prairie and to see what they saw and trying to imagine how they felt and what they went through.

  1. Hi Lyndon

It's nice to see those ruts are still there, but the back drop of that highway and the banking that was cut out for it is a little less impressive. Funny to think ruts last that long. Make sure you don't get your truck stuck in some field Lyndon, otherwise you might be the subject of some sightseeing in 150 years time!!!
